Palm functional trait responses to local environmental factors in the Colombian Amazon

چکیده
Abstract Functional traits play a key role in driving plant community effects on ecosystem function. We examined nine functional various palm (Arecaceae) species and their relationships with moisture, tree-fall gaps, slope, forest type at 29 transects (500×5 m) the northeastern region of Colombian Amazon. Redundancy analysis mean trait values within plot weighted by abundance Pearson correlations were used to evaluate between environmental factors. The composition was correlated local factors, which explained 23% variance. detected dominance tallest palms soils high moisture floodplain forests (p ?0.05). Palms relatively long leaves dominant flooded forests. Acaulescent small slopes, terra firme forests, long-petioled gaps. number seeds per fruit not any variable. Thus, hydrology is one main drivers neotropical communities scale, segregating tall competitive evasive strategies from understory palms, are mainly stress tolerant.

Is oil palm the next emerging threat to the Amazon?
The Amazon Basin appears poised to experience rapid expansion of oil palm agriculture. Nearly half of Amazonia is suitable for oil palm cultivation, and Malaysian corporations are now moving aggressively into the region to establish new plantations. Strong economic incentives for a major Amazonian oil palm industry are likely, given growing global demands for edible oils, oil-based products, an...
متن کاملTrait-Specific Responses of Wild Bee Communities to Landscape Composition, Configuration and Local Factors
Land-use intensification and loss of semi-natural habitats have induced a severe decline of bee diversity in agricultural landscapes. Semi-natural habitats like calcareous grasslands are among the most important bee habitats in central Europe, but they are threatened by decreasing habitat area and quality, and by homogenization of the surrounding landscape affecting both landscape composition a...
متن کاملPredictive Modelling for Fisheries Management in the Colombian Amazon
A group of Colombian indigenous communities and Amacayacu National Park are cooperating to make regulations for sustainable use of their shared natural resources, especially the fish populations. To aid this effort, we are modeling the interactions among these communities and their ecosystem with the objective of predicting the stability of regulations, identifying potential failure modes, and ...
متن کاملAsháninka Palm Management and Domestication in the Peruvian Amazon
Palms are a natural resource that has been abundantly used by Amerindians for centuries. Only a few palm domestications have been reported in the American tropics, where there is great diversity of the Arecaceae family. We report the results of a survey combining ethnobotanical and ecological methods to study the past and present management and distribution of palms by the Asháninka indigenous ...
